Why Are Kids More Susceptible to Dehydration?

When you are a kid there are a lot of super important priorities that define your day. What you are going to wear to school; who you are going to sit with at lunch; and what you are going to play at recess. Dehydration is generally not something you think twice about when you are young. It’s not even a top priority for most adults…

It’s a fact that children are more likely to become dehydrated than adults. Here’s why:

1.) Kids are smaller in size and their metabolism uses up water and electrolytes more quickly than adults

2.) Kids are constantly on the move, losing water and precious electrolytes through sweat

3.) Kids immune systems are less developed than adults and this often leads to the flu and diarrhea which both cause dehydration

4.) Children and infants have higher body water content and require proportionally greater volumes of water to maintain proper fluid equilibrium in their bodies

5.) Kids don’t understand the importance of water and often drink sugar filled juices, sodas, and traditional sports drinks which can dehydrate the body

According to Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, author of ‘Water: For Health, for healing, for life: You’re Not Sick, You’re Thirsty!’, “Because they are growing, children are constantly and naturally dehydrated. The process of cell expansion and division uses up a great deal of water. Seventy-five percent of each cell is water. The body of a growing child constantly need and calls for water; otherwise growth would not be possible. If the natural calls of the body for water are satisfied by manufactured chemical-containing fluids and sugar-containing drinks, healthy growth and development—events that water itself initiates—may not take place efficiently, and crisis events such as asthma and allergies may occur.”

Parents are becoming more and more aware of the importance of health for their kids, but they don’t always give them the proper fuel they need. Artificially sweetened sports drinks and soda are still a staple in the lunch box today. These drinks typically contain caffeine and ridiculously high levels of sugar which can act as a dehydrating diuretic. Soda is addictive and drinking it every day has been shown to lead to blood sugar diseases like diabetes. Studies have shown a strong link between soda consumption and child obesity. Additional negative effects of soda consumption in children include suppressed appetite, bone calcium depletion, tooth decay, and increased acid in the stomach.

Making sure kids are getting proper amounts of water and a balance of electrolytes while limiting sugar intake is critical to their health and well being. Wellness guru and super mama, @sophie.jaffe, knows how important healthy hydration is which is why she trusts Liquid I.V.’s Hydration Multiplier to provide her kids with the optimal balance of water and electrolytes they need to stay active.
