The LIV Guide To Hiking Safely in the Heat

Whether you’re a wilderness enthusiast or not, for many people, spending so much time at home over the last few months has put a premium on the restorative powers of the great outdoors. With social distancing measures still in effect, hiking is a safe, fun way to get some fresh air.

Sure, it may still be summer, but a (moderately) hot day doesn’t have to keep you from hitting the trails! Planning ahead and packing intelligently can go a long way when it comes to hiking. This guide is for anyone who’s hitting the trails for the first time (or first time in a long time)–either alone or with kids. You don’t have to be a seasoned pro to try your hand at a summer hike, but if you do want to get outdoorsy for the first time, here are some tips to help you stay cool and comfortable.

Timing is Everything

The early bird catches the worm! Start early and avoid the hottest time of day, usually around 3:00pm. Not a morning person? No problem. Start your day with Energy Multiplier, our revolutionary blend of Matcha, Guayusa, and Ginger, powered by CTT® for sustained energy throughout the day. Each convenient, travel-friendly stick is comparable to 1-2 cups of coffee and perfect for starting your day or stashing in your daypack.

Get Shady

Planning a summer hike? Don’t underestimate the impact of a bit of foliage or a cliff that casts a powerful shadow. Before heading out in hot weather, set yourself up for success by choosing a shadier trail! Look for paths lined with trees or choose a canyon setting to help you avoid direct sunlight, and in turn, keep you cooler.

Freeze & Go

Mix up a bottle of Hydration Multiplier the night before for 2-3x more hydration. Leave it in the freezer until you’re ready to go, and enjoy ice-cold hydration on the trail! What makes Hydration Multiplier a great pick for your next family hike? Simple, it contains 3x the electrolytes of traditional sports drinks and kids love it! Insider tip: invest in a fun water bottle that will get your kids excited about hydrating.

Dress Appropriately

Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are a must.  Dark colors absorb heat, so opt for light-colored layers. Remember to bring a spare change of clothes for kids. Extra credit: Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it on hand to help you cool off mid-hike. A few spritzes on your face or the back of your neck will go a long way on a hot day. And no surprise here, kids love a spray bottle!

Wear (and Pack) Sun Protection

We shouldn’t have to say this, but we will, just in case. If you’re hitting the trails, wear sunscreen! No matter how cloudy it is, wear sunscreen! And make sure your little ones are wearing it too. While we’re at it, a summer hike isn’t the moment to break out the SPF15. Heading out into the August elements calls for heavy duty reinforcements. Opt for SPF50 and be sure to pack a bottle with you to reapply at least every two hours. Another thing to douse yourself in before you head out? Insect repellent is a must.

Water, Water, Everywhere

Head to a lake or hike near the ocean to take advantage of the water’s cool breeze! You can even dip your hat in the cold water to help you cool off. Word of caution: be especially careful when hiking near water with kids.

Well LIV fam, with these tips, you’re ready to get active and hit the trails. Remember, you don’t have to be an outdoor expert to enjoy an end-of-summer hike!
