Kids Choose Liquid I.V. Over Sugary Alternatives at Kamp Kendricks
Written by Hayden Fulstone, Co-Founder of Liquid I.V.
Summer camp will always have a fond place in my memory. I still vividly recall the first camp I went to in Lake Tahoe, NV. I must have been no more than 9 or 10 years old at the time. I was incredibly nervous when my mom dropped me off. I remember the excitement of making new friends and talking to girls; the thrill of joining the polar bear club and jumping in the frigid lake at dawn; the rush of competing on the field in various sporting events; the sadness when it all came to a close, and I’d likely never see my new friends again. Despite all of these detailed memories, one thing I don’t recall is ever being worried about my personal hydration. It’s just not a top priority when you’re a kid.
Looking back, I knew very little about health and wellness at an early age. But then again, I was just a kid and listened to what my parents told me to do. But did my parents know what was best for my diet? Did they make sure I got the correct balance of fluids and electrolytes?
Go to any summer camp and you will without a doubt notice many, if not all, of the following symptoms of dehydration in some of the campers.
- dry, cracked lips and a dry mouth
- a decrease in urine output, no urine for 8 to 12 hours, or dark-colored urine
- drowsiness or irritability
- cold or dry skin
- low energy levels, seeming very weak or limp
- no tears when crying
Dehydration is not something to play with and it claims the lives of millions (yes millions) of children around the world every year. Fortunately, we have access to clean water in the United States so it’s not as big of an issue here. However, there are still many cases of serious and even fatal dehydration in children who don’t receive proper care. Especially when we are talking about sports camps on incredibly hot summer days…
Liquid I.V. was recently called upon to provide the on-field hydration at Kamp Kendricks in Fresno, CA. Kamp Kendricks is a free football camp for middle schoolers put on by two standout NFL linebackers and brothers, Mychal and Eric Kendricks. ABC Good Sports covered the camp.
Temperatures soared close to triple digits as the camp kicked into full gear. Kids were working hard to improve their skills at a number of drills spread across the field at McLane High School. Sweat poured and top notch rehydration quickly became a hot commodity for both campers, coaches, and even viewers in the sun drenched stands. The grass field was lined with orange Gatorade jugs, all filled with something better. What was the secret sauce that kept the kids going in the dangerously hot temps? Liquid I.V.’s Hydration Multiplier, an electrolyte drink mix that utilizes the breakthrough science of Cellular Transport Technology (CTT)™ to deliver hydration to the bloodstream faster and more efficiently than water alone. 1 Liquid I.V. can provide the same hydration as drinking 2-3 bottles of water.
Led by brothers Mychal and Eric Kendricks, the kids at Kamp Kendricks worked hard and learned a number of valuable life lessons bigger than just the game of football . “Everything you do in life, you’ve got to work hard for. You want those new t-shirts and sneakers? You’ve got to work hard and earn them,” urged Eric. “Nothing in life comes easy. It takes hard work and dedication.”
The kids were allowed to ask any questions of the local legends who were overjoyed by the opportunity to be giving back to the community where they grew up and shined as high school football players. The NFL stars didn’t disappoint, delivering both skill instruction and many poignant words of wisdom relevant both on and off the football field.
“As an older brother or as a younger brother, step up and tell someone when something they are doing isn’t right. Be a good friend. Being a good friend is the #1 thing,” encouraged Mychal. ” I don’t know what I would’ve done if I didn’t play football. But if we took the lessons we learned on the field and from the coaches around us here today, I know we would succeed in life, period. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you do it to the best of your ability.”
Cameron Jordan, a 2x Pro Bowl Defensive End for the New Orleans Saints, was also a member of the coaching staff for the day and provided the campers with some of the highest level of professional instruction available in football today.
Mychal, Eric, Cameron, and the rest of the coaching staff constantly reminded kids to hydrate throughout the day and spoke about the importance of taking care of your body. Overall, the 1st Annual Kamp Kendricks was a huge success and all of the campers avoided serious dehydration thanks to Liquid I.V. We hope to be back as the official hydration drink of choice again next year when the kids take the field once more in Fresno.
