Is Your Skin Trying to Tell You Something?
Whether you’re experiencing an increase in dry skin, fine lines, acne outbreaks, or an overall dull look to your skin, more than likely that’s your skin trying to tell you something. And given your skin is roughly 64% water, evaluating your water intake is always a good place to start when determining the root cause or opportunities for improvement.
We sat down with our Medical Director and MD, Brad Thomas to discuss the impact proper hydration has on the overall look and feel of your skin. Specifically, we wanted a clear answer to the frequent question: can proper hydration reduce the signs of aging?

“Let’s start with the basics, when the body is properly hydrated you can expect to experience an overall improvement in just about every bodily function, including cardiac, liver, and kidney function, along with an improvement in blood flow to peripheral tissues. And because proper hydration increases blood flow to the skin, you will also benefit from an enhancement in skin moisture levels. This enhancement makes your skin visibly look healthier and as a result, younger.

And when you factor in older or aging skin, drinking the proper amount of water on a daily becomes even more critical. Water intake aids in digestion, circulation, absorption, and even secretion. Human skin is an organ that is made up of cells and without proper hydration, it is more prone to wrinkling. Dehydration can result in dry, tight, and flaky looking skin. As you grow older, your body’s ability to conserve water and the sensation of thirst both decline, which combined can lead to dehydration. And when you add a daily coffee, soda or alcohol to the equation, your skin becomes even more dehydrated given all three of these are diuretics.
The other factor playing into the importance proper hydration has on healthy looking skin, is collagen.
This is because the variety of structures in the skin that support collagen require water to work effectively, and with collagen levels decreasing with age, you can imagine how water intake becomes increasingly important.

If I could give you two words of advice for sustaining healthy skin it would be: water and sunscreen. The average person needs eight to ten glasses of water on a daily basis, and in today’s busy world that type of intake can be challenging for some.
