7 Tips to Stay Hydrated All Summer Long

Summer is here! And you know what that means…

Beach days, picnics in the park, baseball and softball with the kids, hours upon hours on the golf course, and many more outdoor adventures. But all of this fun under the hot sun can have some unfortunate consequences, dehydration being one of the most dangerous.

Staying hydrated during summer months is crucial to keep yourself and your loved ones out of the emergency room and hooked up to an IV drip. But it can be tough to drink enough water consistently to stay properly hydrated.

Liquid I.V. Medical Director, Dr. Brad Thomas, is an expert on how the human body is affected by dehydration. “Dehydration and potentially heat exhaustion are much more common in the summer. The combination of the long days, hot summer sunshine, and warm weather lead to the depletion of your body’s water and can be detrimental to your health. Simple rehydration with only water will further reduce the bodies electrolyte levels. It’s imperative to replace both water and necessary electrolytes to keep you going in the hot summer days. Overall improvement in just about every bodily function occurs with appropriate hydration, including cardiac function, liver function, kidney function and blood flow to peripheral tissues. Hydration is critical.”

Here are 7 Tips to Stay Hydrated All Summer Long…

1.) Sip, don’t chug

Your body can only absorb so much, so fast. Downing as much water as possible in one quick burst isn’t the best way to get water into your system. Your body can only take in a certain amount of water at a time so sipping slowly gives your system enough time to absorb. Otherwise it will just run right through you… we all know that feeling.

2.) Salt and sugar are your friend

Salt and sugar have been given a bad reputation over the years. Granted, too much of both isn’t all that healthy for you. But when taken in moderation and mixed at the correct ratios, these two ingredients can do wonders for the human body. Salt and sugar are two of the most vital ingredients needed for optimal hydration and when combined together can enhance the body’s absorption of water. This scientific breakthrough known as the co-transport system was first discovered by Dr. Robert K. Crane in the 1960s and was later adopted by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) to help prevent deaths from dehydration. Liquid I.V.’s Hydration Multiplier utilizes Cellular Transport Technology (CTT), a precise ratio of ingredients that delivers hydration to your bloodstream faster and more efficiently than water alone.

3.) Make water fun and help conserve plastic with a cool reusable bottle

It sounds simple, but making hydration accessible and easy is one of the best tips for better hydration. If you have a water bottle in front of you at all times, you’re more likely to pick it up and drink from it. There are a lot of cool water bottles out there these days from Hydro Flask and Klean Kanteen to Soma and S’well. A fun one you might not have heard of yet is by Hidrate Spark. This nifty bottle is connected to an app, tracks your water intake, and glows to remind you to drink throughout the day.

4.) Lotion – it does a body good

We’ve all been there with the dry, flaky, lizard-like skin. And it’s all a result of dehydration. Amazingly enough, skin is the largest human organ of the integumentary system and our skin’s health is a direct reflection of how hydrated our skin tissue cells are. The skin is one of the first places in the body to stop receiving water when the body becomes dehydrated because priority is given to vital organs such as the liver, brain, and lungs. According to Dr. Brad Thomas, “Proper hydration increases blood flow to the skin and enhances skin moisture, making it look and feel healthier.” In addition to drinking water, lotion is a great way to give your skin the extra hydration it needs from the outside-in. This brand really hydrates the skin and smells amazing too.

5.) Electrolyte Ice Cubes or Popsicles – delicious summer treats

Who doesn’t enjoy a good popsicle in the summertime? Mixing electrolyte powder into water and freezing it into popsicles is a pro move that will keep you going during the hot summer months.  You can also pour electrolyte solution into the ice tray and make ice cubes to improve the flavor and effectiveness of your water. Not only do electrolyte popsicles and ice cubes taste great, but they are great for you and replenish precious sodium that your body loses through sweat. Get some Liquid I.V. and start making LIV pops in no time.

6.) Eye drops – lubrication is essential

Ever forget to blink at work? Your eyes get dried out throughout the day from constant exposure to the elements. Your body knows to lubricate your eyes when they become dry with tears which is why your eyes may seem to water at times. Adding little succulent droplets to your eyeballs can do wonders during the dry, hot summer months.

7.) Fruit and vegetables

We know what some of you are thinking… vegetables are boring. That may be true, but they are packed with water and provide a great source of vitamins and minerals. Did you know cucumbers are made up of a whopping 96 percent water? Now that’s a healthy dose of H2O. We all can agree that fruit is delicious. Watermelon and strawberries are made up of about 92 percent water by volume. Be sure to pack your picnic basket with plenty of fruits and veggies this summer. You won’t regret the hydration benefits.
